What is Data SGP?
Data SGP is a database of student growth analysis results that provides educators with valuable information about student performance. Teachers use it to pinpoint areas for improvement within classrooms while schools utilize it to measure progress towards state or district achievement goals. Therefore, educators need to fully comprehend how Data sGP works so they can utilize it most efficiently and effectively.
SGP analyses require longitudinal assessment data – such as tests or academic measures administered over multiple years – which is then linked with individual students by using unique identification numbers. To facilitate this, the file sgpData contains five rows that provide students’ assessment scores from five school years within its dataset: one row contains unique student identification while five provide scores for assessment scores for those years.
Compare this data with their prior year test score and establish their SGP value – this indicates how much growth has taken place relative to peers and indicates if a particular level is considered adequate by stakeholders; it doesn’t address why growth occurs – whether environmental resources and teaching are providing sufficient growth potential for each student.
SGP can be an extremely valuable tool for improving teacher practice, yet its database has its limitations. One major stumbling block to its effective utilization is preparing the data for analysis: this can take hours of hard labor. Cleaning must also take place, in order to remove noise and make the data readable – otherwise any analysis conducted may result in misleading or inaccurate findings.
The SGP package provides users with tools to help prepare data for analysis and run calculations efficiently, but it is important to recognize that this can be an arduous and laborious task – particularly for schools with large enrollment numbers.
There are, thankfully, ways of making this process more manageable for schools that do not yet possess the staff or software to complete this work themselves. The Student Growth Parcel (SGP) contains various tools designed to facilitate the calculation and comparison of student growth over time. These tools are available in the sgpData vignette and can be used with WIDE format data sets that model time-dependent information required by lower level functions like studentGrowthPercentiles and studentGrowthProjections. These vignettes provide an invaluable resource to anyone interested in using this new technology to improve teaching and learning in their school districts, however they should not serve as a replacement for gaining a deep knowledge of how SGPs are calculated.
