Types of Prizes and Awards

Prizes and awards are financial rewards presented for certain achievements or activities, usually to encourage people to do something they may otherwise never do, and/or inspire them to reach beyond what they had thought possible. There are various prizes and awards: some such as the Nobel Peace Prize are public; while other forms may be private awards given at schools for academic performance or athletic competitions. There may also be awards given annually such as those at Shanghai International Film Festival.

For the 2023/24 racing season, Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) domestic racing prize money will rise eight percent year-on-year, including an eight percent boost for Class Two races as well as an incentive of one million Hong Kong dollars for those horses that win their inaugural Class Two race. Furthermore, Class One races and Classic Series racing series will receive additional support.

The Hong Kong National Book Prize was founded in 1987 to recognise outstanding literary accomplishments in Chinese literature. Now considered one of the premier literary prizes in Hong Kong, this prize has been bestowed annually since 1988 to writers who have significantly contributed to Chinese literary development.

This year’s Hong Kong National Prizes (HKNPs) are presented to Wu Yu-shan for her novel “The Flowers of War”, and Wong Chin-tak for his work “The Unremarkable Life of a Hero”. Both winners received their prizes during a ceremony hosted by Hong Kong National Academy of Arts and Sciences on November 30.

Social unrest and coronavirus have tested racing products worldwide this year, yet Hong Kong Jockey Club managed to remain consistent with its annual increase of domestic prize money. Aside from a 20% boost for BMW Hong Kong Derby purses alone, all classes of race also saw increases, including Group 2 purses rising 5.9%.

Every year, up to HK$100,000.00 in prize funds is offered as the highest award at the B.A. first examination for students achieving outstanding results in History subject at first exam for B.A. degree. The award is presented in memory of George B. Endacott who taught History for over 30 years before passing away – Lecturer (1946-57) and Senior Lecturer (56-72) of History Department (1957-62). Open to final-year students of any faculty studying History for their B.A. degrees studying it as B.A. degree candidates; funded by contribution from Society for Hong Kong Studies as well as ICAS Book Prize family contributions.
