The Domino Effect in Story Writing

Dominoes are rectangular tiles made up of rectangular sections connected by lines with each end marked by dots, with the latter known as the “stub”. Dominoes can be assembled into various games, art, or structures for use as components for games or structures.

Dominoes provide a fantastic metaphor for how things can have dramatic results when certain conditions are in place, which rings particularly true in stories. No matter whether you prefer writing from memory or using an outline tool like Scrivener, understanding the domino effect is key to creating compelling fiction stories. Just as one domino can quickly tip over hundreds or even thousands of other dominoes, events in your story must occur at precisely the right moment so readers feel its impact.

Hevesh utilizes an engineering design process when she begins planning one of her exquisite domino displays. First she considers her creation’s theme or purpose. Next she brainstorms images or words related to that theme before calculating how many types of dominoes she needs before beginning building – saving herself the trouble of having to count tens of thousands by hand while being sure that each color fits perfectly within the design.

She knows that adding too many dominoes of one type will result in chaos, so she drew a diagram of her track with arrows showing where she wanted them to fall and calculated each domino’s weight to know how heavy of a track she needed in order to keep them from collapsing prematurely.

As a professional domino builder, Hevesh has handled projects involving more than 300,000 dominoes and helped set a Guinness World Record for toppling them all simultaneously in circular arrangement. However, even intricate domino designs require considerable patience and energy for completion; Hevesh’s larger installations require several nail-biting minutes before all dominoes begin falling due to physical forces at play.

As soon as a domino falls, its potential energy converts into kinetic energy and is transferred to its next domino and then all other dominoes in motion. The excitement lies in seeing one domino after the next collapse – this makes domino so thrilling to play! While watching events unfold may be thrilling, but watching each piece fall gradually is truly captivating.
